North Beach has a treasure hiding in plain sight. Nancy Calef has been making work in this neighborhood for nearly 50 years, and if you haven't encountered her "Peoplescapes," you're missing something remarkable. Her paintings aren't flat. Literally — she sculpts figures in clay directly onto the canvas, so the work pushes out at you. A demonstration where the crowd becomes a single, breathing organism. Layers of found objects, symbolism, and humor woven into scenes that feel both absurd and completely inevitable. The social commentary is sharp but never joyless. The spiritual dimension is there too — a sense that these crowded, chaotic human moments are somehow sacred, worth documenting, worth taking seriously. Her work asks: what does it mean to share a world with all these people? She's been in the permanent collection at the Beat Museum. She's shown at the De Young, Arc Gallery, Live Worms, and internationally. She's a North Beach original in the truest sense. Welcome back Howard Whitehouse ✨ After the beautiful success of his first workshop, you asked for more — and we listened. We’re honored to welcome back Howard Whitehouse — community ally, educator, and longtime voice in the PSY**** space — for a deep dive into preparation, navigation, and integration. This session is about building the vessel: how to prepare your mind and body, how to approach these experiences with clarity and intention, and how to integrate what emerges in a grounded, meaningful way. 🎨 Artist spotlight — Soheyl Dahi We’re very happy to welcome back Soheyl for his exhibition “You Made My Heart a Garden.” This is the second time he is exhibiting at our shop, and we’re excited to have his work on the walls again. For the First Friday Art Walk earlier this month, visitors were able to see the full exhibition and spend time with the work in the gallery. Soheyl is also presenting a few pieces from his private collection, including works by Jack Hirschman and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, which we’re especially happy to share here in North Beach. If you missed the opening, no worries — the exhibition will remain up for two months, until the end of April.
