There are pieces that you admire…
and then there are pieces you fall into.
and then there are pieces you fall into.
Dining with the Gods by San Francisco artist Nancy Calef is very much the second kind.
A full-on immersion. A portal. A feast.
A full-on immersion. A portal. A feast.
At 36 × 48 inches, this large-scale oil painting unfolds like a dream you somehow recognize — mythological figures, musicians, animals, deities, and human forms all coexisting in a flowing, almost liquid landscape. It feels like a gathering that has always been happening, somewhere just beyond the visible.
But what makes Nancy’s work especially alive is that it doesn’t stop at painting.
She builds into it.
Calef is known for integrating found objects and sculptural elements — often clay, sometimes unexpected materials — directly into her pieces. In Dining with the Gods, these additions create subtle moments of relief and texture, pulling the work out of the flat plane and into the physical world. You don’t just look at it. You navigate it.
There’s something ritualistic about it.
Something generous.
Something generous.
A table appears. Offerings. Music. Water. Transformation.
The scene suggests not just observation, but participation — as if you, too, have been invited to sit down among gods, ghosts, and storytellers.

And yes — we’ll say it plainly:
We have a crush on this piece. A big one.
Four Years of the Shop — April 4th Celebration
This exhibition is also something else for us.
A marker.
A moment.
A small miracle.
Professor Seagull’s Smartshop & Gallery is turning four years old.
And to celebrate, we’re opening the space for a night of art, community, and whatever kind of magic wants to happen.
